The other important thing to note is that Office 2016 for Mac only works with OS X 10.10 Yosemite or higher – it does not work with OS X 10.9 Mavericks or lower so make sure you are definitely running OS X 10.10 Yosemite, OS X 10.11 El Capitan, macOS Sierra 10.12.

I tried most of them with no luck at all. Speaking from my own experience, once one of the Microsoft products crashes, the other ones will not get past the crash window.

The same exact problem occurred with Excel and Word at different times.

I ended up finding out the culprit were some auto recovery files that were located at “Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/Office 2011 AutoRecovery/”. That is where Microsoft stores the autosave information, as well as product status files.

If you are planning to proceed with the following steps, please note you may end up removing autosave information from files you are actively using -time machine backups, anyone?-.

What worked for me was the following procedure. Go to Finder (shortcut: shift-tab, press tab as many times as needed until you get to Finder), then press the following shortcut: shift-command-g. Last, you should paste the following information in the “Go To Folder” window:

Once that is done you may need to press shift and then either click Ok or press enter, this will open a new Finder window. Then you should be able to remove the autosave files you find there. When you are done, close the window and try to start the Microsoft Office product you had issues with.

  • This procedure worked for my particular issue, this did not require for me to re-install either the operating system or the Microsoft Office products. I did not have to create a new user to make the software run again either.
  • My Mac did not have fonts corruption as other people has experienced.
  • If you decide to follow these recommendations, make sure you have a backup of the files.
  • Make sure you do NOT remove any other files or directories while cleaning up.
  • This can also be done from a Terminal session, just do not screw things up.
