If you own a ScanSnap scanner from Fujitsu, we’ve got good news for you. You may have noticed that the ScanSnap app for macOS is 32-bit, prompting a compatibility warning when you open it. Recently, however, Fujitsu has released a new ScanSnap app that fully embraces the 64-bit Mac future.

- Aug 06, 2019 I have a Fujitsu iX500 and ScanSnap Home refuses to recognize the scanner under Catalina. However VueScan does recognize the iX500 and offers far more control over the scans than Fujitsu’s ScanSnap software ever did. I still hope to get ScanSnap working again!

Fujitsu had announced that they would not update the ScanSnap Manager software that drives their older scanners to make them compatible to macOS Catalina; only the newer ScanSnap Home was to be available for current and future versions of the Mac operating system.Sep 10, 2019 However, effective June 20. Apple first started warning users of 32-bit applications earlier this year, implementing a popup notification explaining that 32-bit apps “need to be updated by their developer to improve compatibility.”
First noted on Reddit, Fujitsu has oddly not released the 64-bit ScanSnap app for Mac as an update to the original app. Instead, you’ll have to head to Fujitsu’s website and download the new version directly.
This means that, despite seeing the 32-bit warning upon opening the old app, ScanSnap users are not given a direct option to update the app, or even informed that an update is available.

Fujitsu notes that older scanner models such as the ScanSnap S1500, are not supported by the new 64-bit app. This is because “their support periods hav already expired. Here’s the full list of supported models:

When Catalina was released Fujitsu announced they would no longer be supporting older scanners like the Scansnap S1500. This was one of the best and most popular scanners for a paperless office and Devonthink users. Last year Fujitsu stated “The 64 bit application for macOS is not provided for the old scanner models such as ScanSnap S1500, S1500M, and etc. because their support periods have already expired.”(1)
This week Fujitsu released an updated driver that now allows the older scanners to work with Catalina. “We have some exciting news for those of you who love the simple, one-touch scanning process of ScanSnap Manager. We’ll soon be making ScanSnap Manager available for the new iX1500, as well as for earlier models.”(2)
